Working Conditions
Work Schedule
The work schedule is from Monday to Friday. Instructors are occasionally asked to work on Saturdays, Sundays, or national holidays. Starting/finishing times vary from school to school (e.g. 8:30-18:30, 9:00-18:30, 11:00-20:00, or similar). Instructors will not have more than 5 actual teaching hours per day. Regardless of the number of classes, instructors would be paid for 5.5 hours, which includes some time for administrative tasks.
In most cases, the first classes (or meeting/preparation periods) start early in the day and the last classes or designated meeting/preparation periods fall later in the day. However, there are always break periods in the daily schedule, including one for lunch.
Commute
All instructors are required to use public transportation to commute to work. All commuting costs are covered by Westgate. In Japan, especially in the Kanto region, most people have a long commute of between 30 and 90 minutes each way on crowded trains. Westgate tries to find housing as close to school as possible. However, in some circumstances, instructors might end up with a long commute. Westgate does not permit instructors to use bicycles or automobiles to commute to work.
Dress Code
Japan is a very conservative country, and maintaining a professional appearance is extremely important. Instructors' appearance reflects both on the instructors and on the company.
