Working Conditions

Work Schedule

The work schedule is from Monday to Friday. Instructors are occasionally asked to work on Saturdays, Sundays, or national holidays. Instructors will not have in excess of 5 actual teaching hours per day. Regardless of the number of classes, instructors would be paid for 5.5 hours, which includes some time for administrative tasks.

On-Campus Hours

Starting/finishing hours will vary from school to school, but all instructors are required to be on campus for typically nine hours per day (9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. or something similar), up to 5 of which will be actual teaching hours. On-campus hours generally allow instructors to have at least one preparation period and time to do some paperwork as well as one period set aside for lunch in addition to the designated 5.5 hours each day. The "on-campus" hours do NOT include commuting time.

Commute

All instructors are required to use public transportation to commute to work. All commuting costs are covered by Westgate. In Japan, especially in the Kanto region, most people have a long commute of between 30 and 90 minutes each way on crowded trains. Westgate tries to find housing as close to school as possible. However, in some circumstances, instructors might end up with a long commute. Westgate does not permit instructors to use bicycles or automobiles to commute to work.

Dress Code

Japan is a very conservative country, and maintaining a professional appearance is extremely important. Instructors' appearance reflects both on the instructors and on the company.
